Building a great Business or Building a great Profit?
Posted by Reggie James | March 28th, 2010 | Filed under Business Strategy
“So convenient a thing is it to be a reasonable creature, since it enables one to find or make a reason for everything one had a mind to do.” Benjamin Franklin
A wonderful article in the Telegraph Business Section this morning asked a series of question that have become fairly pronounced in our changing economic landscape. Does a lust for materialism create the wealthiest people? Are those who seek pleasure the happiest in life? What makes the most profitable companies profitable?
These taxing questions, though a little difficult to tackle first thing on a Monday morning are examined in a new book by professor John Kay – Obliquity: Why our goals are best achieved indirectly. So, why are the most profitable companies not always the most profit-oriented and are the wealthiest people in our life also the most materialistic?
In most cases according to Professor Kay, no. He cites examples of people like Bill Gates, Sam Walton & Simon Marks, saying, “These people cared about the activity. The financial side of the activity was secondary. That’s not to say the financial side didn’t interest them at all, and they certainly made bucket loads of money, but in a basic sense that’s not what they were about.” What do you think?
As we strated with a quote, it seems only fair to end with one. “Obviously everyone wants to be successful, but I want to be looked back on as being very innovative, very trusted and ethical and ultimately making a big difference in the world.” Sergey Brin, Co founder, Google.

European Court of Justice favours Google in trademark case against Louis Vuitton
Posted by Reggie James | March 23rd, 2010 | Filed under Branding, Google, Reggie James Digital Clarity, Trademark
In the long-running battle in the European Court of Justice between Google and Louis Vuitton, the court today has ruled in favour of Google over the use of the luxury goods company’s trademarked brand names in search advertising.
I originally wrote about this back in March 2009 on the DConstruction blog http://bit.ly/a8GlAN and a year later we have a ruling. The trademark brand keywords issue has been raging for a while now with M&S and Interflora being in court as far back as December 2008 in the classic ‘War of the Roses’ case http://bit.ly/d4hkRW
Louis Vuitton, which is part of the LVMH group of brands including Moet & Chandon and Dior, had argued that Google was acting illegally by allowing other companies to bid for and use its brand names as keywords to trigger ads on its website
European Court of Justice added that companies that use trademarked brand keywords to push sales must be more transparent about who the seller is.
Google comes up smelling of Roses again.

Bing & Decide: Microsoft's new Ad for search engine
Posted by Reggie James | March 11th, 2010 | Filed under Bing, Television Advertising
Microsoft went live with it’s new push of its Bing Search Engine. The first spot running in the half-time Manchester United versus AC Milan match.
The tag-line, ‘Bing and Decide’, is looking to differentiate the search engine as a ‘decision engine’ that makes sense of today’s information overload.
This is part of a multi-million pound campaign that will also see the company sponsoring the Simpson’s in future episodes.

Posted by Reggie James | March 4th, 2010 | Filed under Automotive
The Porsche 918 Spyder concept is one of three hybrid models unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.
The 918 Spyder has a 500bhp V8 petrol engine and two electric motors, one on each axle, capable of supplying a combined 218bhp to the mix.
The other hybrids were the new Cayenne S and a 911 GT3 R racing car, which uses an electrically driven front axle to supplement the power of the 480bhp flat-six petrol engine and a flywheel storage battery.
Porsche claim the 918 Spyder is capable of lapping the Nordschleife circuit at the Nϋrburgring in less than seven and a half minutes, while producing 70g/km less of carbon dioxide.
