Can Blackberry 6 save RIM?
With the likes of iPhone and Google’s Android platform slowly entering the corporate market, it seems that Research in Motion (RIM), the Canadian company that owns the Blackberry device has one last shot at the corporate space when it releases version 6 of its operating system.

The challenge for blackberry as recently highlighted by Reuters ‘Breaking Views’ and published in The New York Times, is that 80% of the Fortune 100 companies are testing or implementing iPhone. This could be a disaster for RIM who for as long as anyone can remember was the defacto weapon of choice for the corporate warrior.

So what’s changed?

How did these 2 operating systems creep into the business domain and start kicking at Blackberry’s heels. More importantly, why has Blackberry allowed this to happen when the demand for such devices are so high? Looking at the leaked promotional video, it seems that once again they have missed a trick using a generic and broad track by the Black Eyed Peas with a ‘too’ corporate feel to its visual. Make your own mind up but will British bank Standard Chartered recent announcement that it is migrating its workforce from BlackBerrys to iPhones be the beginning of an exodus?

After numerous requests from people asking who the choir are singing the cover of Radiohead’s Creep for the trailer of the film The Social Network that was posted last week (http://bit.ly/9252ml), I have posted a version that I think is similar/better.

The choir who sing on the movie trailer are the Scala Choir & Kolacny brothers, a Belgian girls’ choir who are well known for doing melodic covers of contemporary music.

The clip I have posted is a version of Radiohead’s Creep that sounds very similar to the Scala Choir but is performed by the Vega Choir from Sweden and is accompanied by a rather moving if not slightly disturbing video…

I came across a rather excellent interview on YouTube this morning and thought I would share it with all you lovely people – Darren in NYC will like it in particular.

OK, so what’s happening June 11th 2010 – like we don’t know? The FIFA World Cup in South Africa – exactly one month away. With Nelson Mandela presiding over proceedings, this is quite a significant World Cup for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is being held on the African Continent for the 1st time and secondly, in amongst artists such as Alicia Keys and the Black Eyed Peas is South Africa’s own Parlotones.
So who are the Parlotones? They kicked of their career in 2003 and today have become the biggest selling band in South Africa. Lean more here:

Marina Bunzl has conducted a wonderful and relaxed interview with the band. Unlike the contrived tosh that gets served these days as music interviews, it’s refreshing to see this London based journalist carry it off (in amongst some tweets) with such aplomb. One nil Marina!

It’s polling day today in the UK and like most people I am sick to the back teeth of these individuals parading their wares to the great British public – begging for us to put a cross against their name. The reality is that, if the polls are to be believed, it will be a hung parliament and we will be doing this all over again from Friday.

One thing that has come out of this election is how politicians have uses Social Media to interact with the public at large but also with specific groups and target marginalised individuals. Social media and the willingness for people to share their thought, views and anything else is a major change in both how we live our everyday lives as well as engage with society at large. When watching Question Time on the BBC or listening to Any Answers on Radio 4, it is no longer necessary to do a double take when David Dimbleby ask us to follow the programmes ‘tweets’ or for an old colleague to Link-In to us and for them to see what we’ve been doing (sometimes in great detail) for the past few years.

As I am sharing my thoughts with you, I should point out that the original headline came from Shane Richmond of the Telegraph’s Tech blog who in turn, obtained a spin of the headline and the thrust of the piece from David Armano, of Edelman Digital who had written an article for the Harvard Business Review.

In David’s article he dives deeper into this ‘Social Sharing’ shift, citing it as being bigger than Facebook and Twitter as well as looking at elements that make this phenomenon so big. These elements include:

•	Data Gathering
•	Knowledge Sharing & Collaboration
•	Content Distribution
•	Social Currency

Read more at the Harvard Business Review: http://bit.ly/cQ5zYa

Fast forward 20 odd years and the days of Nick Kamen are distant memory as today’s youth interact with the Social media platforms to discover the latest trends and see what their friend are buying.

What was true 20 years ago is true now and Levi has hit the Zeitgeist again and developed an integrated Social Media strategy with a plug-in for facebook. The plug-in has an integrated “like” feature with every product on the site that allows you to see the number of people on facebook who like the item – it also allows you to cast your own vote.

So the tablet wars are intensifying. Years after Bill Gates held aloft the tablet PC – to the mania we now have with Apple’s iPad, the big search company over at Mountain View isn’t resting on it’s laurels.

There is no love lost with Apple and Google and it seems the tit-for-tat tech war rolls on. Google took on Apple with the development of it’s Android platform and Apple retaliated by enterening Google’s dominant space by joining the advertising market to sell ad-space on all it’s iPhone apple network – citing mobile as the next frontier in bothe search and ad platforms delivery.

Now Apple has iPad, a device that nobody really needed (remember Bill Gates at Comdex 6 years ago) and now everyone wants – mainly thanks to Apple leveraging it’s brand power with the iPhone. It seem s Google is looking to hit back. According to Wellington Financial, Google spent around $40 million buying BumpTop, a company that makes software that creates a ‘3D’ desktop – now let me guess what that could be for…?
Watch this space – in 3D if you can…
